Abstract
Adolescence is a crucial transitional phase characterized by psychological instability. During this period, adolescents are strongly influenced by their environment and interactions with parents, which play an important role in psychosocial development and the formation of personality. This study aimed to examine the relationship between parental communication patterns and selfconcept with adolescent personality at SMPN 253 Jakarta. This study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 273 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Parent–Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS), the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS), and the Big Five Inventory (BFI- 44), focusing solely on the extraversion dimension. The results showed a significant relationship between parental communication patterns and adolescent personality at SMPN 253 Jakarta, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), a correlation coefficient of r = 0.461 for open communication, and r = −0.490 for problematic communication. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between selfconcept and adolescent personality, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and r = 0.432. Adolescents can recognize and develop a positive self-concept through selfreflection, involvement in school or extracurricular activities, and the establishment of healthy social relationships, as well as by confidently expressing their feelings, opinions, and needs to their parents. In nursing practice, educational interventions for adolescents and families can be provided to support personality development and to design programs that promote optimal child growth and development.
