Abstract

Patients with decreased levels of consciousness who are treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are unable to participate directly in decisions regarding their medical care; therefore, family members play a crucial role as surrogate decision-makers. The critical condition of patients in the ICU may lead to anxiety among family members, which has the potential to influence their decision-making preferences. This study aimed to determine the relationship between family anxiety and decision-making preferences in patients with decreased levels of consciousness in the ICU. This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach and was analyzed using the Spearman’s rho correlation test. The sample consisted of 61 respondents who were family members of patients with decreased levels of consciousness who had been treated in the ICU for more than 48 hours. Data were collected using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Control Preference Scale (CPS). The results showed a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.270 with a p-value of 0.036 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate a statistically significant relationship between family anxiety levels and decision-making preferences among families of ICU patients. The positive correlation coefficient suggests a weak to moderate relationship, indicating that higher levels of family anxiety tend to be associated with changes in decision-making preferences.
