Abstract

Background: Low Back Pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability among older adults. Body Mass Index (BMI) is often assumed to contribute to spinal mechanical load; however, evidence regarding its relationship with disability levels in elderly populations remains inconsistent. Methods: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 86 older adults aged 60–82 years at Posbindu Komplek Marinir Depok. BMI was assessed using anthropometric measurements, while disability levels were evaluated using the Indonesian version of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Data analysis included Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality testing and Spearman's rank correlation with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Most respondents were female (81.4%) with a mean age of 66.44 years. The average BMI was 25.91 kg/m² (overweight category), and most participants reported minimal disability (67.4%). Spearman analysis revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.089 with p=0.416, indicating no significant relationship between BMI and functional disability among older adults with LBP. Conclusion: This study concludes that Body Mass Index is not significantly associated with disability levels measured by ODI in elderly individuals with LBP. BMI alone is insufficient to predict the degree of functional disability in this population.
