Abstract
Background: Hospitalization is an experience that can cause anxiety in preschool children, as they are required to face an unfamiliar environment, medical procedures, and separation from their usual routines and familiar surroundings. Preschool children have limited adaptive and coping abilities, making them more vulnerable to anxiety during hospital care. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety is the storytelling distraction technique, which helps divert the child’s attention from stressful situations and provides a sense of safety and comfort. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of the storytelling distraction technique on anxiety levels in preschool children undergoing hospitalization in inpatient wards. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 21 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected by measuring children’s anxiety levels before and after the intervention using a child anxiety measurement instrument. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The results showed that after the intervention, there was a decrease in anxiety levels in most respondents. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicated a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the implementation of the storytelling distraction technique. Conclusion: The storytelling distraction technique was proven to be effected on anxiety in preschool children during hospitalization.
