Abstract

General elections are a fundamental and essential aspect of a democratic state in determining future leadership. This process does not only apply at the national level but also occurs at the local level, commonly known as Local Head Elections (Pilkada). However, various problems are still frequently encountered, such as low levels of political participation, issues related to ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations (SARA), the spread of misinformation, black campaigns, and other challenges. Technological developments have encouraged the South Tangerang City General Elections Commission (KPU) as the organizing institution to utilize various approaches to address these issues. Therefore, this study aims to examine the political strategies employed by the South Tangerang City KPU to increase public participation in the 2020 Local Election. The research uses a qualitative approach by conducting interviews with stakeholders in South Tangerang City and involving members of the community. In addition, data were collected through literature studies, including official documents from the South Tangerang City KPU, official websites, social media platforms, and previous studies. The results indicate that in its efforts to increase public political participation, the South Tangerang City KPU applied a political marketing approach by utilizing various methods to educate the public, both directly through face-to-face interactions and indirectly through the use of technology such as mass media. The strategy also involved the participation of community groups and influential figures in South Tangerang City. Thus, it can be concluded that these strategies were effective in increasing public participation.
