Abstract

The study entitled “The Representation of Nonverbal Communication in Emily Cooper’s Fashion Style in the Series Emily in Paris (A Semiotic Analysis of Roland Barthes)” aims to explore how nonverbal communication is represented through the clothing choices of the character Emily Cooper. The research focuses on the ways Emily’s outfits construct symbolic messages that convey meaning both explicitly and implicitly. By applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, this study interprets the visual elements found in Emily’s fashion as a system of signs that communicates her identity, values, and social position. The data were collected through scene observation and visual documentation from the Emily in Paris series available on Netflix. The findings indicate that Emily’s fashion style reflects her identity as an American woman who embodies individualism and expressive freedom. However, her style frequently contrasts with Parisian fashion norms, which emphasize simplicity, elegance, and subtle aesthetic expression. This study asserts that clothing in media functions not only as an aesthetic component but also as a symbolic form of nonverbal communication that enriches character development within audiovisual narratives. This research employs Roland Barthes’ semiotic method.
