Abstract

Families of ICU patients receiving mechanical ventilation often experience anxiety due to limited understanding of the patient’s condition, care procedures, and the highly technological ICU environment. Health education for families is still predominantly delivered verbally, which may result in suboptimal comprehension and contribute to increased anxiety levels. Therefore, effective health education is needed to improve knowledge and reduce family anxiety. This study aimed to determine the effect of health education using audiovisual media about mechanical ventilation on the anxiety levels of patients’ families. This research employed a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of family members of ICU patients using mechanical ventilation, selected through purposive sampling. Family anxiety levels were measured using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS). The educational intervention was delivered in the form of a video explaining the use of mechanical ventilation. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the Wilcoxon test to compare anxiety levels before and after the intervention. The results showed a p-value of 0.001, indicating a significant decrease in family anxiety after the audiovisual health education. It can be concluded that audiovisual based health education is effective in reducing anxiety among families of ICU patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
