Abstract

Work productivity is an essential factor in supporting overall company performance. Smoking habits and physical activity are thought to influence workers’ productivity, although previous findings remain inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the relationship between smoking intensity and physical activity levels with work productivity among panel factory workers at PT. Indra Cipta Sentosa located in Tangerang, Banten. A cross-sectional design was used with total sampling, involving 64 respondents. Smoking intensity was measured using the Brinkman Index, work productivity using the IWPQ, and physical activity using the IPAQ-SF. Data analysis included univariate analysis, One-Way ANOVA, and the Kruskal–Wallis test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results indicated that smoking intensity was not significantly associated with work productivity (p = 0.097). This finding may be attributed to the fact that most respondents were light smokers or former smokers who had quit for more than one year, reducing the potential impact of nicotine exposure or withdrawal on their performance. Workplace smoking restrictions and the presence of several confounding factors, such as age, workload, education, and psychosocial conditions may also have contributed to the lack of association. In contrast, physical activity showed a significant relationship with productivity (p = 0.001), with notable differences between low and high activity groups (p = 0.038). This result aligns with existing theories suggesting that regular physical activity enhances physiological capacity, improves cognitive functioning, and strengthens mental endurance, all of which can support better work outcomes. In conclusion, smoking intensity did not contribute to differences in productivity among panel factory workers, whereas physical activity level demonstrated a clear and meaningful association with productivity. Workers who engaged in higher levels of physical activity tended to achieve better productivity scores. These findings underscore the importance of encouraging regular physical activity in the workplace to help maintain optimal performance.
