Abstract

This study aims to explore how Generation Z interprets the issue of mental health in the film Ku Kira Kau Rumah directed by Umay Shahab. The film portrays bipolar disorder and highlights the importance of social support for individuals with mental illness. The research adopts a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis theory, which categorizes audience responses into three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving six informants from various cultural backgrounds representing Generation Z. The findings reveal that most informants interpret the film's mental health issues with high empathy and awareness, generally accepting the intended message. However, some informants interpret the message through the lens of personal and cultural experience, resulting in a negotiated reading. The film is considered effective as an educational and reflective medium in raising mental health awareness, particularly among younger audiences.
