Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how netizens interpret the “marriage is not scary” content through the comment section of the TikTok account @shaturday. The research observes and analyzes user comments as a form of audience response to content that presents a positive narrative about marriage. Stuart Hall’s reception theory is applied to understand how audiences decode media messages through three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. This study uses a qualitative method with a netnographic approach. The findings reveal that netizens interpretations are highly diverse. Some netizens fully accept the message, while others negotiate its meaning or even reject it. Expressions of fear toward marriage were found particularly in the negotiated and oppositional positions, often linked to users’ personal experiences and social values. This phenomenon commonly referred to as gamophobia. These findings indicate that psychological and social conditions significantly influence media reception. Furthermore, this study highlights the role of social media as a discursive space where narratives are not only consumed but also actively debated and reinterpreted by audiences.
