Abstract

This research analyzes the process of national identity construction through football, with a case study of the Indonesian National Team during the 2022-2024 period. The global phenomenon of diaspora player integration into national teams has become a focal point, sparking debates about the essence of national identity amidst increasingly multi-ethnic team compositions. Indonesia, as a multicultural nation, actively utilizes naturalization strategies to enhance both athletic achievement and national image. The primary objective of this study is to describe and analyze how the Indonesian National Football Team forms its national identity amidst the presence of diaspora players, and to identify the factors driving the process of nationalism internalization. This research employs Anthony D. Smith's theory of National Identity and Constructivism, which views identity as a dynamic social construct formed through social interaction. A qualitative research method with a case study approach is applied, supported by data collection techniques including in-depth interviews with national team players and relevant staff. The research findings indicate that the Indonesian National Team's national identity is dynamically constructed through the formation of strong collective values, profound cultural expressions (including language use and the role of social media), the utilization of emotional sentiments from players and supporters, and the internalization of national symbols and match traditions. The integration of diaspora players not only brings technical quality improvements but also enriches an inclusive national identity narrative, where players from diverse backgrounds unite for the Garuda emblem on their chests. The conclusion of this study is that the Indonesian National Team successfully serves as a vital space for the construction of a fluid, adaptive, and multicultural national identity. This process reinforces nationalism that transcends traditional ethnic boundaries, manifesting in unity and collective pride amidst the nation's diversity.
