Abstract

Patient education is an important aspect in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The bioethical principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice) must be used as a foundation to ensure that patients not only receive information but are also treated fairly and with respect. Optimal and ideal healthcare services are defined by their capacity to meet or surpass patients’ expectations. The objective of this study is to analyze the implementation of the four bioethical principles in outpatient education for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, from both the physicians’ and patients’ perspectives. This research is a qualitative study using interviews guided by a structured interview protocol. A total of 33 participants were involved, consisting of 3 internal medicine specialists and 30 outpatient Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Data were thematically analyzed using NVivo 12 software. The study showed similarities between physicians’ and patients’ perceptions in the application of the bioethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy. However, in the principle of justice, there were significant differences, particularly in perceptions regarding physician attitude and the adequacy of consultation time. The principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy in outpatient education for Type 2 DM patients at RSUD Pasar Rebo have been appropriately implemented. However, the principle of justice can still be improved through physician communication skills training and the use of educational media to ensure patients receive fairer and more effective information.
