Abstract

The use of zinc oxide (ZnO) in nanoparticle form as a physical sunscreen can enhance user comfort and provide more effective UV protection. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate sunscreen gel preparations with varying concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using the precipitation method. The research involved the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanoparticles, followed by formulation and physical stability testing of sunscreen gel preparations containing different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%) over a three-month period. Characterization results showed that the nanoparticles had an average particle size of 69.4 nm with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.598, and a hexagonal rod morphology. Statistical analysis showed p > 0.05, indicating no significant effect of ZnO nanoparticle concentration variations on the physical stability of the gel, confirming that all formulas remained stable during storage. The most optimal formulation was Formula 4 (6% NP-ZnO), which achieved an SPF value of 37.3, while the highest SPF value was observed in Formula 5 (8% NP-ZnO) with an SPF of 39.8.
