Abstract

This study aims to understand the audience's interpretation of the use of harsh language in the video "I Must Win 3 Trophies in This Game That’s Similar to Stumble Guys! Fall Guys" on Windah Basudara's YouTube channel, as well as the factors that determine differences in these interpretations. The research applies Stuart Hall's reception analysis theory to explore audience positioning, including dominant, negotiated, and oppositional readings, and the cultural factors influencing these differing interpretations. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through focus group discussions (FGD) involving six informants from diverse cultural backgrounds. The research adopts a reception analysis approach based on Stuart Hall's theory, utilizing a descriptive qualitative framework enriched with a constructivist paradigm. Data were gathered through FGD and observation techniques. The findings indicate that among the six informants, one was positioned in the dominant-hegemonic reading category, four in the negotiated reading category, and one in the oppositional reading category. These variations in interpretation were influenced by factors such as the informants' backgrounds, educational levels, and local cultural contexts.
