Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of employee competence and employee development on employee engagement by considering the role of employee adaptation as a mediating variable, particularly among millennial employees working in the South Jakarta area. Millennials are known for their adaptive nature but also have high xpectations for a work environment that is flexible, meaningful, and supportive of personal growth. The population in this study totals 384 individuals, with a sample of 180 respondents. This study uses a quantitative approach, and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the SmartPLS 4.0 software The findings indicate that both employee competence and development have a significant impact on employee engagement, both directly and indirectly through employee adaptation. Employee adaptation is proven to be a significant mediator that strengthens the relationship between competence and development with engagement. Employee development exerts the strongest influence on adaptation ability, while competence plays a more direct and indirect role in supporting engagement. These findings underscore the importance of human resource management strategies that not only focus on developing technical and career-related skills but also on fostering a work culture that promotes flexibility and employee readiness in facing organizational change.
