Abstract

Elderly individuals with stroke are at risk of experiencing anxiety and sleep disturbances, which can lead to a decline in quality of life. Non-pharmacological approaches are considered safe and practical alternatives within the context of family nursing care. This case study aims to implement family nursing care for elderly stroke patients to reduce anxiety levels and improve sleep quality through slow stroke back massage therapy. The study involved two elderly stroke clients: Mrs. S as the primary client and Mrs. D as the resume client. The intervention was conducted over three consecutive days, with each session lasting 10 minutes. Anxiety was measured using the Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS), and sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed a reduction in GAS scores from 56 to 47 for Mrs. S and from 45 to 38 for Mrs. D. PSQI scores also decreased from 17 to 11 for Mrs. S and from 12 to 7 for Mrs. D. These findings indicate that slow stroke back massage can be a component of family nursing care interventions to enhance psychological comfort and sleep quality in elderly stroke patients.
