Abstract

Background: pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection which is still a serious challenge in the world of health, especially in Indonesia, with a high prevalence of cases every year. One of the nursing problems in pneumonia patients is an ineffective breathing pattern that cannot provide adequate ventilation. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Buteyko breathing technique as a non-pharmacological intervention in nursing care for pneumonia patients with ineffective breathing pattern problems at the Tarakan District Hospital. Method: This research uses a descriptive case study approach to one patient who experienced pneumonia. Results: Data was collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations and medical records. Obtained nursing diagnoses of ineffective breathing patterns related to difficulty breathing, nutritional deficits related to inability to digest food, impaired skin integrity related to decreased mobility. The Buteyko technique intervention was carried out for three consecutive days with a duration of 10-15 minutes. Evaluation after the Buteyko technique showed a decrease in respiratory frequency from 27x/minute to 21x/minute and an increase in SpO2 levels from 94% to 97%, from these results an improvement in the patient's oxygenation status was seen. Conclusion: The Buteyko technique has been proven to increase respiratory frequency and oxygen saturation levels in pneumonia patients so it is hoped that health services and nurses can apply this non-pharmacological therapy of the Buteyko technique to patients who experience oxygenation problems such as ineffective breathing patterns.
