Abstract

This study was conducted to discuss "Indonesia's Economic Diplomacy towards Malaysia in Increasing Cocoa Bean Exports for the Period 2017-2021." Indonesia is one of the countries that relies on international trade activities as a driver of its economic growth. Indonesia's international trade has undergone changes since the 1980s, during which Indonesian exports were heavily dependent on oil and gas commodities. In addition to oil and gas commodities, there are non-oil and gas commodities that have become dominant in the development of Indonesia's exports. Furthermore, export activities are one of the activities that play an important role in the economy of a country; one such activity is International Trade. If export activities increase more than imports, it will benefit the country, but if imports are greater than exports, it will cause a decline in the trade balance. Malaysia is the main destination country for Indonesia's cocoa exports, followed by China and India, then the US, and the Philippines. The total cocoa exports in the last five years have fluctuated. Despite not being geographically different, Indonesian and Malaysian cocoa beans have several differences. The main difference lies in handling practices, especially those related to cocoa bean fermentation practices. The decline in cocoa bean production in Malaysia is due to several factors, such as falling world cocoa prices, human resource issues, and competition from land use for palm oil cultivation in 1995. Under these conditions, it was not wise for Malaysia to continue cocoa industry production, so Malaysia ended up importing Indonesian cocoa beans. Keywords: Cocoa Beans, Malaysia, Export, Indonesia
