Abstract
Background: The increasing life expectancy has led to a growing elderly population, often accompanied by various physical and mental changes, including cognitive decline. This decline can significantly impact the independence and quality of life of older adults. Objective: To describe the cognitive abilities of elderly individuals residing at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 1. Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 120 elderly participants were selected using purposive sampling, and data were collected using the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina) instrument. Results: The majority of elderly participants experienced cognitive decline, with 32.5% categorized as moderate, 30% as severe, and 28.3% as mild. Only 9.2% of respondents demonstrated normal cognitive function. Cognitive decline was more prevalent in the 75–89 age group and was slightly more common among women than men, although the difference was not statistically significant. Factors such as education level, mental status, independence, and quality of life were significantly associated with cognitive function. Conclusion: Cognitive decline in older adults is influenced by various factors, including age, gender, education level, and psychosocial conditions. These findings highlight the importance of structured interventions to prevent or slow cognitive decline, such as physical and mental stimulation programs and counseling support to address depressive symptoms.
