Abstract
Dynamic changes have occurred in the way individuals communicate through social media. One phenomenon that has drawn attention is the increasing tendency of individuals to engage in self-deprecation in digital public spaces. This phenomenon, which is often overlooked in the related literature, is the main focus of this study. This study aims to uncover content that raises the issue of self-deprecation and gender bias in content exposure on social media. The researcher uses impression management theory and standpoint theory to explain the two related issues. Then, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method with the help of the constructivism paradigm that embodies this study. The researcher used the methodological approach of multimodal analysis to uncover the meanings conveyed in the content, highlighting major themes that contain issues of self-deprecation and gender bias. The final results of this study describe the characteristics of self-deprecation and gender bias presented in TikTok content. Self-deprecation can be considered as a form of communication as a result of exposure to the evolution of social media in this era, often found using humorous language. Meanwhile, gender bias is a form of validation of injustice by using critical language in practice.
