Abstract

The problem of depression among women aged 15 – 24 years in Indonesia is an urgent health issue. This study aims to analyze the determinants that influence the prevalence of depression in women aged 15 – 24 years in Indonesia in 2023, focusing on sociodemographic, biological, lifestyle, and life stress factors. Data from Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) 2023 were used and obtained through a two-stage cluster sampling technique. Analysis was conducted up to the multivariate stage using multiple logistic regression to generate the Adjusted Prevalence Odds Ratio (aPOR) and the most dominant factor. Results showed that employment status (aPOR: 1,247), education level (aPOR: 1,433 for low education), residence (aPOR: 2.004), chronic diseases (aPOR: 4.604 for two or more diseases), smoking status (aPOR: 9,652 for smoking cessation), alcohol consumption (aPOR: 2,631), pregnancy status (aPOR: 2,632), and fruit and vegetable consumption (aPOR: 3,140) had a significant effect on depression, with smoking status as the dominant factor. This study suggests interventions to reduce smoking among women aged 15 – 24 years, through restrictions on cigarette sales in certain stores and bans on cigarette sales around schools. These measures are expected to reduce the prevalence of smoking and depression in the vulnerable group of women aged 15 – 24 years.
