Abstract
In this study, the Netflix series "Gadis Kretek," which is an adaptation of Ratih Kumala's novel, is examined for its portrayal of patriarchal culture. Utilizing semiotic analysis developed by Roland Barthes, the study explores the series' narrative and visual components to uncover the ways in which patriarchal values are displayed. Gender roles and systematic oppression against women are highlighted in this series, which is set in 1960s Indonesia. Denotation, connotation, and myth are the three levels of semiotic analysis that are used in this study to identify and examine different symbols, narratives, and visual components that are representative of patriarchal norms. Important sequences that show how deeply ingrained patriarchal norms limit women's freedom and independence include those involving women working as kretek rollers, widower marriage dilemmas, and limitations on women's roles in the factory. These elements' mythological undertones normalize gender roles that are restricted and highlight the necessity of secrecy within this cultural context, all of which serve to reinforce patriarchal ideology. "Gadis Kretek" offers a critical perspective on long-lasting social structures and criticizes discriminatory social norms, even though certain episodes concentrate on emotional dynamics and interpersonal relationships without overtly addressing patriarchy. A critical examination of patriarchal culture, the series offers insights into gender power dynamics and women's struggles for autonomy and freedom in addition to a gripping story. Stronger examination of the emotions and backgrounds of the female characters, more encouraging male characters, educational components about gender equality and patriarchy, and a more realistic portrayal of the effects of the main characters' small but meaningful changes are some suggestions for improving the story. The series can improve viewer engagement and its educational impact on patriarchy and gender equality by working with activists and academics, holding public discussions, and launching social media campaigns.
