Abstract
Murder is a criminal and immoral act that causes great harm to the victim and his family. Recently, Indonesia was shaken by a cruel murder case within the Police institution, namely the Ferdy Sambo case, which attracted public attention because it was committed by a senior police officer. This study aims to examine symbolic interactionalism in non-verbal communication at the Ferdy Sambo trial. Through a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, it was found that the audience's understanding of non-verbal messages was very diverse. Some informants emphasized the importance of facial expressions as an indication of feelings or emotions, while others focused on interpreting the gestures of judges or lawyers. The results of this study show that Stuart Hall's Reception Analysis Theory can be used to understand variations in audience understanding of non-verbal messages. Hall's concepts of hegemonic dominance, negotiation, and opposition are reflected in the different viewpoints of each informant. In the media context, audiences' understanding of non-verbal messages also affects news construction. Some informants recognized the importance of non-verbal messages in covering the trial, while others saw them as additional news value. This reflects Hall's concept of the encoding-decoding process, where the media controls the content of the message which is then interpreted by the audience according to their context and experience. The results of this study provide an overview of the complexity of audiences' understanding of non-verbal messages in the Ferdy Sambo trial, which can be correlated with Stuart Hall's Reception Analysis Theory. This shows the importance of considering the active role of the audience in interpreting media messages, as well as the complexity in the construction of news meaning.
