Abstract
Patient safety is the top priority in healthcare services, necessitating proper patient identification procedures to prevent medical errors. dr. Suyoto Hospital has implemented patient identification policies in accordance with the 2022 hospital accreditation standards. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of patient identification performed by nurses in the inpatient unit using a descriptive qualitative method, incorporating interviews, observations, and document reviews. Informants included two patient safety target committee members as key informants, seven nurses as primary informants, and three patients as supporting informants. The results indicated that while policies and procedures for patient identification are in place, the socialization of these procedures to new nurses is less effective. The knowledge and skills of inpatient nurses are generally good, but the implementation of Standard Procedures Operating (SPOs) varies and is inconsistent. All nurses comply with the procedure of using two patient identifiers; however, some nurses do not introduce themselves and explain the purpose of their services. Active communication and verification by patient companions after medication administration are well-implemented. Although patient identification practices meet most of the 2022 accreditation standards, there is a need for improvement in the consistent implementation of SOPs and socialization. It is recommended to conduct in-depth socialization and training through e-learning and periodic training sessions. Enhancing the SOPs and ensuring easy access through digital methods is also advised.
