Abstract

This study aims to explore the reception, including both acceptance and interpretation, of urban society towards gender issues presented in the Barbie Live Action film using Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding reception analysis theory. This research used qualitative document study utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. The sampling technique was accidental sampling. Researchers used four stages of data analysis according to Miles & Huberman, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and withdrawal/verification by data triangulation. The result of this study shows that out of ten informants, six are in the dominant hegemonic position, four are in the negotiation position, and none are in the opposition position. The majority of informants show a positive tendency towards the gender issues presented in the Barbie Live Action film, despite variations in their interpretation of the message. These variations in reception and interpretation are due to differences in the informants' background knowledge, education, culture, and life experiences.
