Abstract
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder impacting thoughts, perceptions, emotions, language, feelings, and behavior, leading to significant changes in cognitive and behavioral patterns. Patients with schizophrenia have a higher susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) compared to the general population. Atypical antipsychotics, such as clozapine and risperidone, are the primary treatment option for managing schizophrenia through neurotransmitter modulation. However, these medications often entail serious metabolic side effects, including obesity, type 2 DM, and hyperglycemia. This study aimed to investigate the effects of clozapine and risperidone therapy on blood glucose levels in patients with schizophrenia and T2DM at dr. H. Marzoeki Mahdi Psychiatric Hospital in Bogor. Twenty-two patients participated in the study, with data analysis employing hypothesis testing for differences in proportions between groups and One-Way ANOVA. The findings indicated that both clozapine and risperidone therapies, either alone or combined, increased blood glucose levels significantly (P=0.002). Patients using atypical antipsychotics without antidiabetic medication showed a rise in blood glucose levels from 139 mg/dl to 178 mg/dl. In conclusion, a greater elevation in fasting blood glucose levels was observed in patients undergoing clozapine therapy compared to those receiving risperidone at dr. H. Marzoeki Mahdi Psychiatric Hospital in Bogor
