Abstract
Post-Stroke Depression (PSD) is often widely unrecognized, inadequately diagnosed, and lacks appropriate treatment. PSD can diminish functional abilities, thereby exacerbating recovery outcomes. This study aims to analyze the relationship between post-stroke depression and functional independence among stroke survivors. It employs a descriptive correlational research design with a cross-sectional approach. The study includes 102 stroke survivors with a duration of 3-12 months post-stroke. Instruments utilized include the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Functional Independence Measurement (FIM). Univariate analysis involves proportion tests, while bivariate analysis employs Spearman correlation tests. The average PSD score indicating moderate depression levels. The average functional independence score suggesting relative independence with assistance. A Spearman correlation coefficient of -0.782 indicates a strong negative relationship, indicating that increased PSD tends to correlate with decreased functional independence. The study yields a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05), signifying a highly significant relationship between PSD and functional independence among stroke survivors. Findings underscore that PSD influences functional independence among respondent post-stroke. The study recommends improved respondent selection for enhanced generalizability and further exploration of factors affecting functional independence to advance post-stroke patient care.
