Abstract
Background: Prolonged hospital stays for ICU patients in Indonesia can adversely affect patients, families, and hospitals. Predictive systems like NEWS II and APACHE II are known for their high sensitivity and accuracy in monitoring patient conditions. Objective: This study aims to analyze the association between NEWS II and APACHE II scores and the length of ICU stay. Method: The research employed a descriptive analytical approach with a quantitative methodology, utilizing retrospective data from medical records spanning September 1, 2023, to February 29, 2024. Results: The majority of ICU patients at Tarakan Regional Hospital were male (54.1%) and aged between 55-64 years (37.7%). Chronic diseases were prevalent among 98.4% of the 60 patients studied. Spearman rank tests revealed significant correlations: NEWS II had a p-value of (<0.001) and r (-0.627) with ICU length of stay, while APACHE II showed a p-value of (<0.001) and r (-0.629). The findings underscore a strong relationship between NEWS II/APACHE II scores and ICU length of stay, suggesting their utility in predicting patient outcomes. This supports their continued use in ICU settings to potentially optimize patient management and resource allocation.
