Abstract

Sexuality is a taboo and sensitive topic in Indonesian society. The presence of the movie Dear David which raises the issue of sexuality triggers many pros and cons in society. Film as one of the mass media has the power to shape perceptions and provide understanding related to an issue to its audience. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out how the meaning (reception) of adolescent audiences regarding the representation of sexuality in the film Dear David. The researcher focuses on the messages of sexuality displayed in the film Dear David as the producer of the message to the audience as the consumer of the message. Audiences who play an active role can interpret the messages constructed in the film in a variety of different ways. The method used in this research is reception analysis with a qualitative approach and constructivism paradigm. The research data was collected through interview, documentation, and observation. Research informants were selected using purposive sampling technique. Based on Stuart Hall's Reception theory, the results of this study show that of the five informants, there is one informant in the dominant hegemonic reading position, four others are in the negotiated reading position, and none of the informants are in the oppositional reading position. The differences in meaning are influenced by various backgrounds, such as education, knowledge, and experience related to sexuality.
