Abstract

The issue of gender equality in women's roles is still not considered important by countries in East Asia, including South Korea. This has led to the emergence of liberal feminist theory, which promotes individual freedom, democracy, equal opportunities, and equal rights for women. This article discusses how globalization and the influence of Western culture have brought liberal feminist values to the East Asian region. It aims to criticize discriminatory phenomena, such as double standards against women in the entertainment industry, particularly in the world of K-Pop. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study approach and interview techniques as primary data sources. The writing aims to identify the issue of discrimination in South Korea through the phenomenon of gender role inequality, specifically double standard behavior towards female K-Pop idols. The results of this research show that the criticism aims to challenge traditional values in East Asian countries that often conflict with the principles of liberal feminism, such as gender equality and women's individual autonomy. In an effort to achieve gender equality, the basic concept of feminism is rooted in the principle of liberalism, stating that women and men must be equal and have the same rights and opportunities to achieve full personal autonomy. However, gender issues that limit women's life choices are believed to be difficult to eliminate because the South Korean government itself has no desire to intervene in combating this issue. The struggle against discrimination requires support from various parties so that justice and system changes for the better for women in South Korea can be achieved. Therefore, the attitude of society and the actions of the government in achieving gender equality in South Korea play a crucial role in this issue.
