Abstract

This research aims to discuss how experiences, forms of culture shock and intercultural communication barriers experienced by Karo Batak immigrant students at the Veteran National Development University Jakarta. This research uses descriptive qualitative method of constructivism paradigm and phenomenological approach to explore the experience of the students more deeply. The data sources in this study used primary data and secondary data, and the data collection technique was carried out by purposive sampling. Then this research uses the Miles & Huberman data analysis stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation and withdrawal/verification with data triangulation. The final results of this study indicate that the Karo Batak immigrant students at UPNVJ experience various forms of culture shock caused by differences in food, language, customs, gestures, socialization, geographical conditions, technology, and religion. In addition, Karo Batak immigrant students at UPNVJ face various intercultural communication barriers which include factors, culture, perception, motivation, experience, emotion, language, and nonverbal communication. There are various obstacles experienced by Karo Batak students. But there are also many ways that Karo Batak students use to overcome these obstacles.
