Abstract

ICU is a specialised setting to provide nursing care services to patients who require close monitoring and the use of supporting medical devices. Constipation is a change in the gastrointestinal system in the inability to defecate normally for 3 days. Constipation can occur due to various factors, one of which is the side effects of treatment carried out in the intensive care unit (ICU). Factors that can cause constipation in ICU patients are medical conditions, age factors, ventilator use, sedation history, length of stay, and patient immobilisation. In addition to pharmacological therapy using laxatives and osmotic laxatives, the management of constipation can be supported by performing abdominal massage to stimulate gastrointestinal function with the I Lov U technique. After a 5x24 hour intervention, there was an effect on abdominal condition, bowel noise, and CAS score. The results of the analysis indicate that abdominal masssage intervention with the I Lov U technique has an effect on improving the gastrointestinal system of elderly patients with stroke in the ICU.
