Abstract
Tinea pedis is a common dermatophyte infection caused by the fungus Epidermophyton floccosum. White galangal (Alpinia galanga), known to contain compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, and triterpenoids, has the potential for treating fungal infections. This research employed an experimental method using the well diffusion technique. White galangal rhizomes were extracted through maceration for 2 days using 70% ethanol as the solvent. Concentrations of the extract studied were 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. Ketoconazole 2% was used as the positive control, while distilled water served as the negative control, and observations were made for 2 x 24 hours. Data analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney Post-Hoc test. The research findings indicate that white galangal rhizome (Alpinia galanga) extract significantly inhibits the growth of Epidermophyton floccosum. The most effective concentration in inhibiting fungal growth was found at 50%, with an average inhibition zone diameter of 20,85 mm at 24 hours and 14,68 mm at 48 hours of observation. These findings suggest the potential of white galangal extract as a fungistatic antifungal agent for treating tinea pedis. These results align with previous studies suggesting that an increase in extract concentration results in a larger inhibition zone size.
