Abstract

Film, as part of mass media, does not only function as a medium of entertainment but can also be a medium for giving educative messages. Through their cinematography, scripts, and acting, all can be means of conveying an idea. As the industry evolves, Indonesian films are now also aware of addressing critical issues currently happening in society. One of them is the film directed by Lucky Kuswandi, Dear David, who wants to convey how men can also become a victim of sexual harassment. This study aimed to determine the representation of sexual harassment against men depicted in the film Dear David using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis by looking at the aspects of denotation, connotation, and myth. The results obtained in this research are seven scenes from the film can represent sexual harassment against men. This film succeeds in providing a picture of the reality experienced by many male victims of sexual harassment in Indonesia who also experience various forms of sexual harassment, both verbal and non-verbal. Dear David also succeeded in acting as a medium for criticism of educational institutions that are not appropriate in handling the problem of sexual harassment and also succeeded in depicting the reality of how male victims of sexual harassment are still often looked down upon because of the stigma of toxic masculinity resulting from patriarchal culture.
