Abstract
Abstract: The decline in the number of COVID-19 infections caused the Indonesian government to set policy easing, one of which is changing the learning method to a mixed learning. Changes in learning methods are carried out quickly and are dominated by face-to-face learning. This makes new stressors can arise in the process which if not handled properly can cause anxiety for students. The students will carry out coping mechanisms to overcome the problems they face. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between coping mechanisms and anxiety levels in undergoing rapid changes in learning methods for medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study used an observational analytic method with a cross sectional approach which was conducted in August 2022 with a consecutive sampling. The sample are students of the medical faculty class 2019,2020,2021. The instruments are used the first demographic data, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) and a coping mechanism questionnaire with a Likert scale. Results: From the data analysis, it was found that 71.3% of students experienced mild anxiety, 17.6% experienced moderate anxiety, and 11% experienced severe anxiety. As for coping mechanisms, 59.6% experienced adaptive coping mechanisms, and 40.4% experienced maladaptive coping mechanisms. In the bivariate test using the Chi-square test (p <0.05), it means that there is a relationship between the level of anxiety and coping mechanisms in undergoing rapid changes in learning methods for medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students need to self-evaluation related to the coping mechanisms used and consult is also needed in dealing with existing anxiety problems.
