Abstract

Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease that often occurs in elderly women. There are several risk factors for osteoporosis including age and excess body mass. Bone strength can be measured using BMD (Bone Mineral Densitometry) as an early detection of osteoporosis. This research uses analytic observasional studies with cross sectional design. A sample of 104 subjects with a simple random technique, body mass index will be calculated and bone strength measured using a portable ultrasound densitometer. The subjects of the study were women aged 60 years or older who had a body mass index (overweight and obesity) according to inclusion criteria, and exclusion criteria, namely a history of disease that could increase the risk of osteoporosis and influence the results of the study. Research conducted in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta City is a study that aims to determine the relationship between overweight and obesity with bone strength in elderly women. The results of this study found 77 overweight subjects (74%) and 27 obese people (26%). While the subjects suffering from osteoporosis were 90 people (86.5%) and osteopenia 14 people (13.5%). Analysis of the two variables using the chi-square test with a pvalue of (p = 0.512) which showed that no significant relationship was found between overweight and obesity with bone strength in elderly women.
