Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is pain during menstruation. Primary dysmenorrhea can occur in 60-75% of young women. Dysmenorrhea can be classified into mild, moderate, and severe pain. Pharmacological therapy can be given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or analgesics. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or analgesics are the first-line therapy for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. Pharmacological therapy to relieve menstrual pain can use paracetamol or mefenamic acid. This study aimed to determine the comparison of the decrease in the degree of dysmenorrhea of paracetamol and mefenamic acid in UPNVJ Faculty of Medicine students. Method: This study used a cross-sectional approach, this method was chosen to determine the effect of using paracetamol and mefenamic acid as independent variables on decreasing the degree of dysmenorrhea pain as the dependent variable in UPNVJ Faculty of Medicine students as a sample. The sampling technique in this study used a non-probability sampling technique that is purposive sampling with a sample size of 50 respondents. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Results: The results of the statistical tests showed that there was a significant mean difference between paracetamol drug therapy and mefenamic acid drug therapy in decreasing dysmenorrhea pain degree (p = 0.047). Conclusion: There was a difference in the percentage of pain reduction paracetamol and mefenamic acid. Discussion: Paracetamol is not like NSAIDs. Paracetamol does not reduce inflammation in tissues. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as inhibitors COX-1 and COX- 2, whereas paracetamol inhibits COX-1 variants that are active in the central nervous system rather than at sites of injured or inflamed tissue.
