Abstract
Shell and tube heat exchanger on hydraulic power pack unit is used to cool radiator coolant in order to absorb more heat from engine thus prevent engine from overheating. Baffle is an important component in the heat exchanger. The type of baffle affects the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at the shell side. So this research was conducted, with the aim to obtain the most optimal heat exchanger design by varying the number of baffle amounted to 8, 9, and 10 baffles for segmental and helical types. The method used in this research is by simulation using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) application. The results show that the greatest effectiveness value was the variation in the number of helical baffles 10 with an effectiveness value is 57.92%. The results also show that the helical baffle type has a greater cold fluid heat transfer coefficient, that is 117.752 W/m^2.°C. However, the simulation of helical baffle variation also had a greater pressure drop, that is 195.482 Pa. Thus, the optimal baffle variation is the segmental baffle type with the number of baffles 9 with an effectiveness value is 57.47%, a heat transfer coefficient value is 99.155 W/m^2.°C, and a pressure drop value is 26.069 Pa.
