Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia can be correlated with atherosclerosis event. As known melinjo seed extract (MSE) contains ingredients that can improve LDL cholesterol levels. This objective to determine the effect of melinjo seed extract (MSE) (Gnetum gnemon) on the improvement of LDL cholesterol levels in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) fed high fat feed. Samples of 30 male white rats Galur Wistar, 2-3 months old, weight 150-300 grams. Rats were grouped: (K1) standard feed, (K2) high-fat feed, (K3) high-fat and simvastatin feed, (K4) high-fat feed and 1000 mg / kgBB MSE, (K5) high-fat feed MSE 2000 mg / kgBB, (K6) high fat feed with 4000 mg / kgBB MSE. LDL cholesterol levels got examined after 14 days and terminated using ketamine xylazin intramuscularly, then the blood plasma was taken and measure the plasma LDL level. One Way Anova test, there is an effect of giving melinjo seed extract on LDL cholesterol levels (p = 0.001). Bonferroni post hoc test, giving MSE 4000 mg / kgBB can reduce LDL cholesterol levels (p = 0.001) close to normal values. In conclusion, the 4000 mg / kgBW MSE has the effect of improving LDL cholesterol levels which is greater in proportion to the dose given.
