Abstract
Nutritional status in adolescents has a significant impact on the quality of life and future health of this age group, therefore, it’s important to identify the factors associated with their nutritional status. This study aims to explore the relationship between several factors such as physical activity, consumption patterns of ultra-processed foods (UPF), and body image perception with the nutritional status of first-year medical students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. This is an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional approach. This study involved 105 students selected using simple random sampling by randomizing students numbers with a number generator application. Data collection included physical activity levels measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), UPF consumption assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and body image perceptions measured using the Stunkard Figure Rating Scale (FRS), while nutritional status was determined based on Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body Mass Index for Age (BMI/A). Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses using the chi-square test and the contingency coefficient. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a normal nutritional status (59%). There was a significant association between body image perception (p = 0,007, C = 0,26) and nutritional status, whereas physical activity (p = 0,400, C = 0,08) and UPF consumption (p = 0,486, C = 0,07) did not show a significant association with nutritional status. Thus, body image perception was found to be associated with the nutritional status of adolescents among medical students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta, whereas physical activity and UPF consumption were not found to be associated with the nutritional status of adolescents in this study.
