Abstract

Transformer insulating oil plays an important role as both an electrical insulating medium and a cooling medium to ensure the reliable operation of power transformers. Conventional mineral insulating oil has several limitations, including its non-renewable origin and low biodegradability. Therefore, vegetable-based insulating oils, particularly Rubber Seed Methyl Ester Oil (RSMEO), have attracted considerable attention as environmentally friendly alternatives. This study aims to investigate the effect of thermal aging on dissolved gas generation in RSMEO and to evaluate the characteristics of the generated gases using the Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) method. The oil samples were subjected to thermal aging at 115°C for 48 hours and 96 hours, followed by gas chromatography analysis to determine the concentrations of H₂, CH₄, C₂H₆, C₂H₄, C₂H₂, CO, and CO₂. The results indicate that thermal aging promotes the formation of degradation gases, with ethane (C₂H₆) identified as the dominant hydrocarbon gas, while acetylene (C₂H₂) was not detected. Based on the Key Gas Method (KGM) interpretation, the oil condition was classified as overheated oil due to the dominance of C₂H₆ in both samples, and the Duval Triangle placed both samples in the T1 zone, indicating a thermal fault below 300°C. Overall, the results demonstrate that DGA is capable of identifying gas generation characteristics resulting from thermal aging in rubber seed oil, indicating its potential application as a diagnostic method for ester-based transformer insulating oils. Keywords: rubber seed oil, RSMEO, thermal aging, DGA, transformer insulating oil
