Abstract
This study aims to examine the extent to which game exposure influences the formation of romantic beliefs through the mediating roles of avatar identification and parasocial relationship among players of Love and Deepspace, a romance-themed dating simulation (otome game). This study employs the mere exposure effect theory, which emphasizes that repeated exposure to a stimulus can influence individuals' attitudes and evaluations toward that stimulus. An explanatory quantitative approach was employed using a survey method through the online distribution of questionnaires to 414 respondents from the @kampungphilos on X (formerly Twitter), a fanbase of Love and Deepspace in Indonesia. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling method. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The findings indicate that game exposure does not have a significant direct effect on romantic beliefs but has a significant indirect effect through avatar identification and parasocial relationship. These findings suggest that the formation of romantic beliefs among Love and Deepspace players is not solely influenced by the level of game exposure but also by players' psychological engagement.
