Abstract
Panel material offcuts constitute a primary waste source in wood-panel-based furniture manufacturing. This study designs and evaluates a two-dimensional cutting pattern optimization method to minimize offcut waste at PT PKX, a custom panel furniture company. The proposed method adopts a two-phase approach: Phase 1 employs the Guillotinable Bottom-Left First-Fit Decreasing Height (BLFFDHg) heuristic to generate guillotine-feasible cutting pattern candidates, and Phase 2 applies an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model with an identical bins formulation to select the pattern combination that minimizes total waste area while ensuring every component's demand is met at least as required, possibly with production surplus when the available pattern combinations cannot divide demand exactly. The method is tested on four real-world projects at PT PKX across different production scales. Results consistently show that the proposed system generates more efficient cutting patterns than the current manual method, achieving waste percentage reductions of 5.96 to 14.62 percentage points. All 25 ILP models solved to Optimal status, confirming the system's reliability as a panel cutting pattern planning tool.
