Abstract

Buckling is a structural failure phenomenon that can occur in the hydraulic arm cylinder rod of an excavator due to axial compressive loading and high stroke lengths. This study aims to analyze the effect of stroke length variation on the critical buckling load, identify the deformation patterns and buckling modes, and validate the numerical model by comparing Finite Element Method (FEM) results with Euler's analytical theory. The study was conducted on the hydraulic arm cylinder rod of a 20-ton excavator made of AISI 4140 steel with stroke variations of 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 20%, and 10% of the maximum rod length using ANSYS Workbench 2024 R1. The results indicate that stroke length has an inverse relationship with the critical buckling load, where shorter rod lengths produce higher buckling resistance. Comparison between FEM simulation and Euler theory shows an error of less than 10%, indicating good agreement and confirming the validity of the numerical model in predicting the buckling behavior of the excavator hydraulic rod.
