Abstract

The development of digital communication systems requires modulation techniques that maintain transmission quality while providing high spectral efficiency under various channel conditions. Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is widely used to achieve higher data rates. This study analyzes the performance of 16QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), Rayleigh Fading, and Rician Fading channels and determines the recommended modulation scheme based on simulation results. Simulations were conducted in MATLAB using Energy per Bit to Noise Power Spectral Density Ratio (Eb/No) and Bit Error Rate (BER) as performance parameters. The results show that 16QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM achieved the target BER of ≤ 10^(-5) at Eb/No values of 14 dB, 18 dB, and 23 dB over the AWGN channel. None of the three modulation schemes reached the target BER of ≤ 10^(-5) over the Rayleigh Fading channel, even at the maximum Eb/No value of 40 dB. Over the Rician Fading channel, the target BER was achieved at Eb/No values of 32 dB, 37 dB, and 37 dB for 16QAM, 64QAM, and 256QAM. The AWGN channel provided the best performance because it is affected only by additive noise, while the Rician Fading channel outperformed the Rayleigh Fading channel due to the presence of a Line of Sight (LOS) component, which improves signal quality. Based on the simulation results, 16QAM achieved the best performance across all channel models by providing the lowest BER with lower Eb/No requirements than 64QAM and 256QAM. Therefore, 16QAM is recommended as the most suitable modulation scheme.
