Abstract
Oil palm empty fruit bunch waste has potential to be utilized as reinforcement material in polymer-based composites. This study aims to determine the effect of oil palm fiber mass fraction variation on the impact energy absorption and tensile strength of epoxy matrix composites, as well as to compare the effect of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 5% and liquid smoke treatments on the mechanical properties of the composites. The fiber mass fractions used in this study were 10%, 20%, and 30%. The oil palm fibers were treated by immersion for 2 hours and then mixed with epoxy resin and hardener at a ratio of 2:1 using the hand lay-up method. The impact test was conducted using the Charpy method based on ASTM D6110, while the tensile test was conducted based on ASTM D3039. The results showed that increasing the mass fraction of oil palm fiber tended to improve both impact energy absorption and tensile strength of the composites. In the NaOH-treated composites, the impact energy absorption increased from 5.00 J at 10% fiber fraction to 10.67 J at 30% fiber fraction, while the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) increased from 13.60 MPa to 18.10 MPa. In the liquid smoke-treated composites, the impact energy absorption increased from 4.33 J to 8.67 J, while the UTS increased from 10.62 MPa to 17.63 MPa. Overall, the NaOH 5% treatment produced better mechanical properties than the liquid smoke treatment for all fiber mass fraction variations. The best result was obtained from the composite with NaOH 5% treatment and 30% fiber mass fraction.
