Abstract

Large-capacity induction motors in geothermal power plant electrical systems require an appropriate starting method because the starting process can trigger current surges and voltage drops that disturb system stability. This study analyzes and compares the performance of the Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Reduced Voltage Soft Starter (RVSS) methods on three critical motors of PLTP X, M1 620 kW, M2 132 kW, and M3 75 kW, using Dynamic Motor Starting simulation in ETAP software with evaluation criteria based on the IEEE 3002.7-2018 standard, namely a bus voltage dip not exceeding 20% and an acceleration time below the motor safe stall time. The DOL method produces bus voltage dips of 6.25% for M1, 2.73% for M2, and 12.27% for M3, all within the 20% limit. RVSS reduces the inrush current by 16.50% for M1, 11.19% for M2, and 4.77% for M3. This reduction has no significant impact on voltage dip, with differences of 1.06%, 0.38%, and 0.52%, because the system impedance characteristics, low on the main bus (GT 53.3 MVA) for M1 and M2 and high on the EDG (660 kVA) for M3, limit the difference RVSS can provide. The RVSS acceleration time is slightly longer due to the lower initial voltage, and both methods remain below the safe stall time of each motor. With adequate safety margins and insignificant performance differences, the DOL method is recommended as the primary starting method for all three motors due to its simpler construction and higher reliability. RVSS remains a viable alternative if the system weakens or a greater inrush current reduction is required.
