Abstract

Bus drivers operating the DAMRI Merak Terminal–Soekarno-Hatta Airport route face demanding working conditions, with shifts of up to 12 hours per day. On January 23, 2020, an accident occurred on this route caused by a drowsy driver, highlighting the need for an in-depth study of driver fatigue. This study aims to analyze the effect of physical fatigue and mental workload on the occupational safety of DAMRI bus drivers on the Merak Terminal–Soekarno-Hatta Airport route. The research design is quantitative and correlational, involving the entire population of active drivers on the route (n = 24). Physical fatigue was measured using the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI), mental workload using the Driving Activity Load Index (DALI), and occupational safety using a reverse-coded behavioral-frequency questionnaire. Data were processed through validity and reliability testing, classical assumption testing, multiple linear regression, and Pearson correlation analysis using SPSS. The results show that all drivers (100%) fell into the moderate physical fatigue category (mean SOFI score of 2.46 on a 0–6 scale), while 58.3% of drivers fell into the high mental workload category (mean normalized DALI score of 52.29 on a 0–100 scale). Physical fatigue (t = 2.206; sig. = 0.039) and mental workload (t = 2.080; sig. = 0.043) each had a significant partial effect on occupational safety, and jointly explained 42.3% of its variance (Adjusted R² = 0.423; F = 2.609; sig. = 0.010). A strong, significant correlation was also found between physical fatigue and mental workload (r = 0.605; sig. = 0.002). These findings indicate the need for shift schedule restructuring, implementation of a structured fatigue risk management system, and cabin ergonomic improvements to reduce driver fatigue and strengthen operational safety.
