Abstract
A total of 55% of residents in South Tangerang City have never sorted their household waste, a pattern that is also observed in Serpong Subdistrict (Mayor of South Tangerang, 2025). This finding is notable given that Serpong Subdistrict is served by 52 waste banks and 6 reduce-reuse-recycle waste transfer stations (TPS 3R), facilities that should be able to support effective waste management. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with household waste management behavior in Serpong Subdistrict, South Tangerang City, in 2026. A quantitative approach was employed, using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional study design. Primary data were collected through a survey using a questionnaire whose validity and reliability had been previously tested; a sample of 117 respondents was selected using a multistage cluster sampling technique. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis with multiple logistic regression. The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that attitude was significantly associated with household waste management behavior (aPOR=3.24; 95% CI=1.10–9.26) after controlling for education, knowledge, facilities and infrastructure, and information exposure. Respondents with a negative attitude were found to be 3.24 times more likely to exhibit poor waste management practices than those with a positive attitude. The South Tangerang City Environmental Agency is expected to improve public attitudes toward waste management by allocating budget for recyclable waste collection containers, producing and publishing social media content at least once a week on how to process waste according to its type, promoting waste bank activities, discouraging waste-burning behavior, and establishing partnerships with educational institutions to foster good waste management habits from an early stage.
