Abstract
Objective: To describe the characteristics of patients with pleural effusion managed with an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital during 2024–2025. Method: This retrospective descriptive observational study used medical-record data and total sampling. Forty-nine eligible patients were analyzed using univariate analysis. Categorical data were presented as frequencies and percentages, while numerical data were summarized using appropriate measures of central tendency and dispersion. Results: The mean age was 51.1 ± 15.0 years, and 40 patients (81.6%) were women. Malignancy was the most common etiology (83.7%), particularly breast cancer (53.7% of malignant cases). Pleural fluid was predominantly exudative (87.8%), and bilateral effusion was the most common location (49.0%). Among 48 patients with documented blood-pressure data, median systolic/diastolic blood pressure before IPC placement, after placement, and at the end of the hospitalization episode was 123.0/79.0 mmHg, 124.0/84.5 mmHg, and 120.0/80.5 mmHg, respectively. Most patients were compos mentis at all three assessment times. Improvement in dyspnea was documented in 87.8% of patients. Median post-IPC hospital stay was 3 days (Q1–Q3: 2–4.5). Among 26 patients with documented catheter-removal dates, median IPC dwell time was 47 days (Q1–Q3: 35.5–78.3). Repeat IPC placement was documented in 12.2% of patients. Conclusion: Patients managed with IPC were predominantly middle-aged women with malignant etiology, exudative pleural fluid, and bilateral effusion. Most were compos mentis and had documented improvement in dyspnea, while repeat IPC placement occurred in only a small proportion.
